Your questions, answered honestly

The things people really want to know

Straight answers to the worries that stop people asking. If yours isn't here, just message us - no question is too small or too daft.

Eligibility & qualifications

Am I too old?

No. There's no upper age limit for Student Finance England undergraduate funding. Many of the students we help are in their 30s, 40s, 50s and beyond - returning to study or starting fresh.

What if I have no qualifications?

That's very common and absolutely fine. Access to Higher Education and foundation-year routes are designed to get you degree-ready without traditional A-levels. We'll find the right starting point for you.

I've studied before - does that matter?

It can affect how much funding you're entitled to, and it's the single most common thing people get wrong on their own. But it rarely rules you out completely - and checking it properly is exactly what we do for you, free.

Do I need to be a UK citizen?

Not necessarily. Many people with settled or pre-settled status, or who meet residency requirements, are eligible. Tell us your situation and we'll check it honestly.

Funding & Student Finance

Is it really funded - what's the catch?

Tuition is covered by a Tuition Fee Loan, and a Maintenance Loan can help with living costs. There's no hidden catch - but we'll always be honest that it's a loan, not a grant. You repay it only once you earn above the income threshold, and any balance left after the set period is written off.

Will this affect my benefits?

It can, depending on your circumstances and the type of study. This is important, so we talk it through with you honestly before you commit to anything - no surprises later.

When do I have to start repaying?

Not while you study, and not while you earn below the threshold for your repayment plan. Once you earn above it, you repay a small percentage of the amount over the threshold, taken automatically like tax. If your income drops, repayments pause.

What's the difference between the two loans?

The Tuition Fee Loan pays your course fees directly to your college. The Maintenance Loan is paid to you to help with living costs. Read the full Student Finance guide ›

Costs & fees

Do I have to pay you?

No. Our guidance is completely free to you. We're paid by our partner colleges when a student enrols - so our help with your application and Student Finance never costs you anything.

Are there any hidden charges?

None. No admin fees, no consultation fees, nothing. If anything ever would cost you money, we'll tell you clearly and in advance.

Do I pay anything up front for my course?

For eligible students, the Tuition Fee Loan covers course fees and is paid directly to the college - so you don't pay fees up front.
